Bard Announces Another Tax-Free PC Plus Holiday

HARRISBURG – The state’s popular tax-free holiday for personal computers has been expanded and is scheduled again for Aug. 5-12, just in time for back to school, said Rep. Ellen M. Bard (R-153).

During the tax-free week, families may purchase a home computer for non-business use without paying the state’s 6 percent sales tax or the additional 1 percent in Philadelphia and Allegheny counties.

The tax break also includes separate purchases of computer accessories and Internet access devices, such as Web TV.

Examples of peripheral items that may be purchased tax-free are scanners, monitors, keyboards, microphones, disk drives, random access memory, storage drives, memory modules, disks, video cards, sound cards and digitizers.

Also exempt are single-user licensed software and service contracts purchased in the same transaction with a personal computer, accessory, or an Internet access device.

Purchases must be made for home, non-business use and may be from any retail outlet in Pennsylvania, via mail, or on the Internet.  During the holiday, shipping and handling fees are also tax-free.
