Bard Introduces Measure to Promote Teen Pregnancy Prevention
Tuesday April 06, 2004
Rep. Ellen M. Bard (R-Montgomery) introduced House Resolution 680 today to promote teen pregnancy prevention. Bard joined with the Montgomery County Teen Parent Task Force at a news conference in Norristown to formally introduce the resolution."Everyday in Pennsylvania, 60 teens become pregnant," said Bard. "That’s 60 teens too many. We must get the word out to teens that pregnancy at such a young age is detrimental to their success in life."
Her resolution will, if passed by the House, designate May 2004 as "Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month," to bring attention to this important issue affecting teens.
According to recent statistical reports, pregnant teens are less likely to remain in school than non-pregnant teens. Teen fathers complete less school than men who postpone fatherhood until after 21 years of age. Also, health risks and complications during delivery are higher for pregnant mothers than for women who delay childbearing until a later age.
Last, the United States has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and births in the western industrialized world, which costs the United States $7 billion annually.
"Locally, I’m working with the good people on the Montgomery County Teen Parent Task Force to bring attention to this issue that affects too many teens each and every day," Bard said. "Helping teens avoid early and unintended pregnancies will help them have a brighter future."
Bard encourages citizens and organizations like parent teacher organizations, women’s organizations, and other community groups to join her in promoting teen pregnancy prevention awareness.
Bard hopes to get action on this resolution when the House returns to session.
